about

Since its earliest days, MIT has held a pivotal role in contributing to the relentless progress of science and technology.  The incessant drive brought about by the advent of devices and machines in everyday life is reflected in the high-powered community of its students, faculty, and especially its architecture. Amid the many technological advancements, it’s easy to forget that these accomplishments do not exist independently from the hard-working custodians that work behind the scenes, the facilities they help maintain as spaces of production, and the building systems that support such scientific progress.

These building systems run throughout the whole campus and are connected by an extensive underground network of tunnels and subbasements. Deconstructing this fabric of energy as an abstract and essentializing category engages with the spatial and materialist attributes of the system. Listening to these spaces not only provide an opportunity to connect to the institution's rich history, but through the process of creating a new audible infrastructure, the work is also an invitation to articulate design’s environmental agency. Furthermore, this work aims to promote a certain consciousness of our architectural experience and its intimate dependence on the intricate fabric of energy that enables such modern technological production to take place.
